Addressing Mental Health in Kenya: Combating the Silent Epidemic. Quinter Naliaka
As May rolls around each year, it serves as a reminder of the importance of mental health awareness. With May designated as Mental Health Awareness Month, people around the world are encouraged to come together and raise awareness about the importance of taking care of our mental health. In Kenya, like many other countries, mental health is a major concern; a topic that is often swept under the rug, with many people failing to recognize the seriousness of mental disorders and with many individuals suffering from undiagnosed mental disorders. While physical health is often prioritized, mental health is equally important, and undiagnosed mental disorders can lead to devastating consequences for both the individual and society at large. What is mental health? Mental health is the state of being healthy regarding one’s emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It is an essential aspect of our well-being that affects our emotions, thoughts, and behavior. It is a significant determinant of how we cope with life's challenges and how we interact with those around us. What are mental illnesses/poor mental health? These conditions are characterized by the impairment of an individual’s normal cognitive, emotional, or behavioral functioning.
